‘Rocky Ros Muc’ is first Irish language film to be longlisted for an Oscar

Irish

An Irish language documentary has been longlisted for the Academy Awards. Rocky Ros Muc, which won Best Irish Feature Documentary at the Galway Film Fleadh, is the first Irish language film to do so.

Directed by Michael Fanning and produced by Máire Bhreathnach, it tells the story of Galway boxer Sean Mannion, who left the Gaeltacht village of Ros Muc in Galway in the 1970s for a new life in Boston. A story of survival. Of determination, honour and strength. A story about identity and community. Not just for Sean Mannion, but for the thousands of emigrants like him. He would go on to fight Mike McCallum in Madison Square Garden in 1984 for the WBA Light Middleweight title.

The news was announced on Twitter, “Delighted to announce Rocky Ros Muc is officially an Oscar contender! An 1ú uair ariamh do scannán faisnéise Gaeilge.”
